The Austrian architecture and design firm AllesWirdGut (“everything will go well,” in German) was invited to participate in a young-designer’s exhibition on living space in Vienna. Their design is a cylindrical living room which incorporates multiple functions of the home. “We wanted something that was not only new but that would also be interactive and fun for the audience of the exhibition,” explains architect Herwig Spiegl.

TurnOn is till now the most discussed and international well-known project of AWG. TurnOn got featured in the Architectural Record’s 2005 Young Architect’s Awards. What AWG primarily communicates with TurnOn is explained by Architect Otto Kapfinger:”to reform building industries and architects‘ corresponding approach to design. Their impact is a much more powerful meshwork of planning teams and constructional components from which no call is heard for creative individuality, quite like in the case of automobile or EDP combines. Rather, functional and technical optimization would be essential with a
teamwork objective to mass-produce ever smaller, ever more powerful components that at once facilitate ever larger ranges of individual operational freedom for end users.”

Different circular modules are attached together to create the wheel-like space that can be turned to alter its function. “Just like customizing a car, the buyer can customize and accessorize to their own tastes and price range. Colors can be chosen, accessories such as flat-screen monitors could be added,” says Architect Herwig Spiegl, “and the modules could be arranged in infinite combinations.”

The infinite combinations sound very promising but I would like to continue the line of thought on the kinetic movement, rather the finding a similarity to people living in a hamster wheel. In relation to former post like the Prada Transformer by OMA, which also defined floor, wall and ceiling as one unit. This design actually shows that quicker transformation as in comparison to every month of the Prada Transformer brings more benefits. Benefits which a static solution couldn’t offer. Again, if we look back to the Flip Ship with also a rotating interior, the TurnOn could have been a perfect solution.

Finding a realistic situation for the TurnOn is not what I am aiming at. It is more the fact to go back to the fundamental elements of architecture and to challenge this. In terms of efficiency defining a floor, wall and ceiling a one unit can be a decisive argument for a good architecture. But claiming this as good architecture is seeing it as a manufactured product like a car. To challenge the true fundamental elements of architecture like a wall or floor, many aspects should be considered. I am looking forward to ideas and design which challenge this.
